MURALIDHAR GIRLS’ COLLEGE began as a girls’ school with a very small number of students in 1919. The founder was Sri Muralidhar Bandyopadhyay, Principal of Sanskrit College, a celebrated scholar and educationist, whose dream was to inspire in young women the ideals of national tradition and culture.

Muralidhar Girls’ College situated at the heart of the city at Gariahat is one of the premier institutions of women’s education in Kolkata, West Bengal. The College began a humble beginning in 1940 A.D. soaring high steadily through a span of 75 long years in Academics as well as in N.C.C. and N.S.S. establishing itself as a heritage institution. This reputed college in Kolkata provides various Arts and Science courses affiliated under the Calcutta University, Kolkata, and is particularly attentive towards the empowerment of girl students. A 3-year (job oriented) Degree course under Calcutta University (TTMV) Tourism and Travel Management caters for jobs in all Government & non-Government sectors conducted through an efficient placement cell. There are future plans of opening honours in three major Science subjects namely Chemistry, Zoology and Mathematics, which would strengthen the Science wing of the college. UGC sponsored career and market-oriented, skill enhancing add-on courses that have utility for job, self-employment and empowerment of the students are thought of for the benefit of the students. Meanwhile, the heritage building established in 1940 is undergoing a massive constructional change (by the Public Works Department, Government of West Bengal)- first in its history ever. IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) serves the educational aspirations and helps us to build an inclusive knowledge society through inclusive education offering various Certificate courses along with their college degree. After successful completion of 3 years degree course students are getting opportunity to pursue their Post Graduation courses (Master degree, Post Graduate Diploma, and Diploma) from IGNOU. The students are treated with personal attention, empathy and care to prepare them for higher education. “Dedication, Discipline, and Determination” – the 3 D’s are strongly inculcated amongst the students shaping them to be perfectly “humane”.
