Charuchandra College has been christened after the Late Charuchandra Chattopadhyay, a notable Indian nationalist. It has its history embedded in the country’s post-partition scenario, when Dr. Satyendra Nath Roy and some other eminent academicians of Dacca University and its affiliated colleges initiated to establish a college in South Kolkata to cater the needs of migrant refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan.
The family members of the Late Charuchandra Chattopadhyay, following Charuchandra’s spirit of social work came forward to assist in the noble task. The college was founded on 1st October, 1947, with Dr. Satyendra Nath Roy as the first Principal and its housed in its present premise at 22 Lake Road, Kolkata – 700 029.
This co-educational college started with courses in intermediate Arts and Science and Degree Arts. Presently, the college offers B. A. and B. Sc. Honours and General Courses. The college has introduced B. Com. Honours and General Courses exclusively for girls in the Morning Section. At present 10 Honours and 17 General subjects are taught in the college.
Physical, moral, social and cultural development of the students are further taken care of by inter and intra-class cultural competitions. Annual sports meet and annual concert are held every year.
Charuchandra College, which has completed its sixty-nine years in 2015, is now a commendable name in the State especially in the fields of Sports and Games, cultural activities, NSS Programmers and Research Activities. Effective cooperation from the College Authority has encouraged both the students and the teachers to achieve this mark of excellence. In the fields of Teaching-Learning Process and Evaluation it has witnessed a mixed response for the last four years; and one of the reasons behind this is the cognitive level of the students admitted to this College. Moreover, changes in the evaluation process in Plus Two level have greatly impacted on the performance of the students in the University Examinations. Students often opt for some subjects, like English (Honours) and Zoology (Honours), which they are not actually fit for. But as they score high marks in the School Leaving Examination they form a false self-esteem about their competence in that particular subject, and go for it. Repeated counseling often fails to convince both the students as well as their guardians. Unless and until a well-planned, uniform evaluation system is developed by the Boards or Councils or the Universities, this gap will remain. In addition to this, the present socio-economic scenario of the State as well as of the Country has failed to give our future citizens proper directions and guidance. Against such background, the teachers of Charuchandra College, which caters mostly to the first-generation learners, have tried its best to maintain a standard in academic performances by taking Remedial Classes, Tutorials and After-Class Contacts with the slow learners.
Space-crunch is a perennial problem faced by the College since its inception; and that definitely hampers the growth of the institution. Located in the heart of city, it has neither the scope for further expansion, nor it is financially sound enough for procuring land for its Second Campus. Therefore, we have to make optimum utilization of the space by constantly renovating the existing building and its adjacent portions. Owing to this space-crunch, new subjects, chiefly laboratory-based subjects, cannot be introduced. The College Central Library suffers most for shortage of space. Professional Job-Oriented Courses also cannot be introduced. Yet, within these constraints the College has introduced courses in Computer Science, Journalism and Mass Communication, Statistics and Physical Education in Under-Graduate level; and Evening Post-Graduate Courses in Bengali affiliated to University of Calcutta. The College has recently become a Study Centre for Post-Graduate Courses in English, Zoology and Chemistry under the Directorate of Distance Education of Vidyasagar University; and the classes have already commenced from 20 December 2015.
This is what we are and what we are up to. Our College has to be assessed not in comparison with other colleges in other States; but in keeping in view the inherent limitations within which we have to work. But, we have never deviated from our professed aim, and we always try to make our students realize and translate into their lives the motto of our College—ALTIO RAPETO—I Seek Higher Life.
