Twenty five years ago, on 11th April 1988, a dream was realized for the people of Kolkata in the sylvan surroundings of Behala. Under the guidance of the well known philanthropist and industrialist Shri Madhav Prasadji Birla and Smt. Priyamvada Birla, M.P.Birla Foundation Education Society, a non-profit Institution, established the M.P.Birla Foundation H.S.School on James Long Sarani, Behala, Kolkata.
Initially the school, with a strength of 1500 students, was affiliated to the CBSE.The first Class X batch appeared for the CBSE Examination in March 1993 in which all 65 students secured first division marks.Later, the school switched over to ICSE in the year 1995. In 1996, the school was upgraded to the plus 2 category, catering to both Science and Commerce streams. Every year, the students continue to come out with flying colours not only in the board examinations, but also in All- India competitive examinations, thus ensuring their place in premier institutes for higher studies. The school has grown from strength to strength since its inception in 1998. The present strength of the school stands at 3450. What would M.P.Birla Foundation H.S.School be without the MPBians! The Principal of the school, Mr. Herbert George, was awarded the Best Principal of the Year in 1998. He was the recipient of the Rashtra Samman Award by Pariwar Milan in the year 2008. In July 2013, a Life Time Achievement Award has been conferred on him by the ASISC.
The primary aim of the school is to impart and lay emphasis on sound moral education, values, principles, skills and knowledge and thereby encourage students to strive for excellence in all fields of endeavour. In keeping pace with modern technology, the school has introduced Smart Class to enhance the learning skills among students.

The quiet environment and verdant greenery of the school provide the right ambience for a "shiksha – ashram". The school was awarded The Best Maintained School in 1998 by the The Telegraph School Awards for Excellence.
The school is, perhaps, the only institution in West Bengal, which provides "Mentors" for weak students who are under their guidance and supervision. They help the child to overcome his/ her weakness by assisting the child both inside and outside school hours. These mentors are the teachers of the school and if required they visit the homes of the students to understand their problems and solve the same.
The school, as desired by its founder, takes care to ensure a balanced growth of the students' mind and body. The goal of this institution is not only to promote education by encouraging academic excellence and development of skills, but also to groom students in understanding Indian Civilization and its values. The aim is to foster strict discipline moulded on the lines of Indian Heritage. Compassionate governance with constant search for excellence has brought the school to where it stands today.
The School is a place where children are encouraged to say "I see it, I get it, I can do it."
We are one of the largest premier educational institutions in the eastern horizon of the country with a vision to excel in all spheres. Set up in 1988, we have journeyed through all these years and gained the trust and appreciation of thousands of students and their parents alike.
Our philosophy of education has always been meeting the needs of the individual child. Children acquire skills and knowledge easily if we can make the surrounding stimulating and purposeful. In the 21st century, the Digital Revolution affects us all. Quite simply, it is changing everything: a brilliant barrage of information, entertainment, companionship and education is speedily available. In such a surrounding when work and effort is valued, the child's self -esteem is heightened, and from this results self-motivation. We try to understand and work with each child, and we firmly believe that it is our responsibility to enable the child in our care to develop as a whole.
We all are concerned with children as they have lives beyond the classroom, and we cannot meet their needs if we show no concern for their activities outside school. We are the first institute in Eastern India to have started the concept of individual monitoring and counselling for the weaker students through 'Mentorship' which involves direct contact with the parents of such children by specially appointed mentor-teachers who analyze and devise ways to upgrade the back benchers.
If innovation and novel ideas are a key to a bright future, then we can surely remain assured of our place under the pedagogic sun. We put forward a distinctive blend of offerings in the areas of knowledge and enterprise in the form of encouraging students for debates, elocution and quiz contests as well as organizing and taking part in various cultural events. We also have an optional extra-curricular activity programme every Saturday where multifarious disciplines like music, dance, cricket, basketball, football, kickboxing, etc. are taught under the careful guidance of renowned coaches and teachers.
We pledge to work for every child- and in the process, open new vistas in the area of education.
