The rich heritage of La Martiniere is not measured merely with the passage of time. La Martiniere has evolved, in its journey striving always to fulfil the vision of its Founder, to provide holistic education to the youth, to make them responsible and worthy citizens of our country.
At the heart of this vision of our Founder lies compassion and the spirit to give. From its inception, La Martiniere has provided education to the Foundationers whose needs, including their stay in the hostel, are provided for by a trust fund created for this purpose. One such student, Sir Paul Chater, who received his education under the provisions of the trust fund, became the Founder of modern Hong Kong. Having imbibed the true Martinian spirit, he became a generous benefactor of the schools helping La Martiniere to consolidate and validate its philosophy.
The hostel at La Martiniere provides a second home for many children including the Foundationers. Here they are taken care of, nurtured, and looked after, the infrastructure providing for their comfort and effective growth.
Spread over acres in the heart of Kolkata, La Martiniere offers all the amenities for the 21st Century learning such as laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Home Science, Art Studio and Computer facilities, Audio Visual room, teaching aids for effective learning, large fields for play, swimming pool, spacious auditoriums and gymnasium. Activities which enhance the qualities of spirit and the body are as important to us as is academic learning. School education here is not limited only to book learning, the school has always encouraged sports and games and has produced many well known sports persons. It is affiliated to the Council for ISC Examination, New Delhi, which conducts the ICSE and ISC Examinations in Class X and XII.
La Martiniere has truly blended global education with strong local roots. The students learn to think internationally, while upholding their own rich cultural heritage.
Students of La Martiniere work untiringly, in tandem with national and international N.G.O.s to enhance environmental awareness, to preserve the rich resources that Nature provides for us.
A far back as the late 18th century our Founder, Major general Claude Martin has shown his concern and care for those who were marginalized in society. He had created a fund which provided for the rehabilitation of convicts, to enable them to come back into mainstream society. In keeping with the vision of our Founder, La Martiniere provided scope of service to the society through club activities. Students work closely with institutions such as Mannovikas Kendra, The Little Sisters of the Poor, CINI Asha and PUBLIC, to name a few.
La Martiniere fund and administers a training unit named SEOMP (Self Employment Oriented Multi-Purpose Project). This unit gives vocational training to adults who have been unable to continue with and complete their education. They train in crafts and technical work and so gain employment with larger organisations or become entrepreneurs and live life in respectable circumstances.
The contribution of the school to society has been recognised by people of stature and importance in their own fields. The Late Dr. B. C. Roy, the renowned Chief Minister of West Bengal, The Late Shri. Jyoti Basu, legendary politician and erstwhile Chief Minister have both graced the school with there presence. The 150th years’ celebration of the school was presided over by the then President of India, Shri Giani Zail Singh. As our Founder came from France, we have a France connection and the then President of France, President Mitterand visited the school on his visit to the country.
On 7t May, 2012, the School was honoured by the visit of MS. Hillary Rodham Clinton, Secretary of State – USA. This was indeed a memorable day for the school. We were also honoured by the visit of Mrs. Kiran Mehra Kerpelman, Director, UN Information Centre for India and Bhutan.
Our Students moved out of the four walls of La Martiniere to larger arenas in the world doing their Alma Mater proud.
A the closing ceremony of the 175th year celebration, the Dept. of Post, India, issued a commemorative stamp to acknowledge the contribution of La Martiniere Schools, Kolkata in the field of education.
In this our 178th year, we look forward to building characters of children who will put back into society as much as they have taken, so as to build a world that is both equitable and progressive
Welcome to one of the most respected and admired school – with a rich legacy and a remarkable standing of 179 years!
Owing to strong academics, top-notch and varied extra and co-curricular activities, and consequently the exemplary performance of our boys, both in and outside school, we treasure the reputation of being rated as one of the best school in India.
We are a school based on strong Christian values, but secular in our instructions. We start with boys at two and a half years, which really puts them at the center of ‘all that the school is about’, and gradually build their connection with the school in a compassionate and healthy environment. This develops the sense of passion for learning and they start to enjoy each day in school. After class 12, their journey in school comes to an end, when they pass out as thorough gentlemen, ready to face the world.
I am so very proud of our student’s accomplishments. All of this is achieved under the close guidance of highly learned and caring staff, who know what it takes to continue to give.
A successful school does not function in isolation. As the new Principal, it will, therefore, be my endeavor to develop a tri-polar bonding – between the school, the students and the parents, so as to share the collaborative effort that will bring forth spiritual nurturing, effective and successful learning. A kind of education that can change my boys and through them will make the world a better place. It will be a source of satisfaction to see that my boys have been prepared not just to earn a living but have learned how to live.
I use this platform to acknowledge with gratitude, the dedication and sustained efforts of all those people who played an integral part in the growth and development of this great institution over the past 179 years. These include the Board of Governors (past and present), the former Principals, past and present Staff, the Alumni and most, of course, my students.
Wishing everyone a remarkable and triumphant journey in school and always!
