Sovarani Memorial College has started its journey on 1st December, 1971, at the picturesque village of Goalpota under Jagatballavpur Block in Howrah district. The college-campus spread over more than 3 acres of land stands beautiful on the bank of the river ˜Kana Damodar", which is only 35 k.m. away from Kolkata.
At the very beginning , the college had no building of its own. The classes were started in one of the historic residential buildings of Satyanarayan Khan at Goalpota village from the session 1971-72. As a Degree College affiliated to the University of Calcutta, it offered general subjects like Bengali, English, Philosophy, Political Science and History at the undergraduate level and Commerce at the Pre-University level. Over last more than four decades, there has been a huge change in the scenario. Now, 10 Honours subjects and 15 (exclusive of Commerce subjects) General subjects are being taught. The college has been a Stude-Centre for PG-courses (Distance Mode) in 3 subjects namely Bengali, English and History under Vidyasagar University.
It was Satyanarayan Khan who had dreamt of disseminating education among the inhabitants of Jagatballavpur, a village in the district of Howrah and outside it. In a bid to materialize this dream, he established Sovarani Memorial College in memory of his beloved wife Sovarani Devi in 1971. This institution of higher education started functioning on 1st December of the same year. Shri Khan was a true lover of education, a renowned social worker and a man of dedication. Apart from this college, people of Jagatballavpur are indebted to him in various ways. With the passage of time, there has been considerable expansion of this institute of higher studies. Honours courses in 10 (ten) subjects , General courses (formerly called Pass course) in 15 (fifteen) subjects (in addition to Commerce subjects) are being taught now. In this context, it's a pleasure for me to mention that PG-courses in 3(three) subjects namely Bengali, English and History (Distance Mode) have been introduced from the academic session: 2015-2016 under Vidyasagar University, Midnapur, West Bengal. We do have an NCC-unit which is being run satisfactorily under the active leadership of the ANO. Some of the outgoing cadets of this unit are getting job. There is an NSS-unit in the college. The volunteers of this unit are participating in diverse programs inside and outside the college under the guidance of the Program-Officer. We do have a Gymnasium which needs to be used on regular basis. The laboratories and the library are, day by day, being highly equipped.
Now, I would like to draw the attention of all to some hard realities in respect of day-to-day administration. Firstly, the number of Whole-Time Permanent teachers who join the college on the recommendation of the College Service Commission is not adequate to meet the departmental requirements though there are Govt. approved Part-Time & Contractual Whole-Time teachers in the college. In addition, the college has to engage a large number of Guest Lecturers for whom the college has to make funding of its own. It is expected that this problem will be solved partly in near future. Secondly, the most-striking problem is that the college-office is very much understaffed. Right now, there are 12(twelve) vacancies in the posts of non-teaching staff out of 25(= 23+2) sanctioned posts. It is needless to say that immediate filling up of these vacant posts is essential. Very recently we have received permission for filling up some of the vacant posts. This is a ray of hope in solving the problem.
Now I must convey thanks to the University Grants Commission for sanctioning and releasing a big amount as financial assistance under various heads during the XIIth plan. Because of this support, it has been possible for the college authority to cause infrastructural development in the college. A large number of books have been purchased, an appreciable amount has been utilized towards building construction and renovation etc. Different job-oriented programs (Entry-in-Services) and remedial-coaching are being conducted. Some teachers are completing their doctoral work under FDP (Faculty Development Program) during the ongoing plan. Seminars (State-Level, National-Level) are being organized by various departments of our college.
I would now like to report that after a long gap, we are ready for reassessment and reaccreditation of our college (2nd Cycle) by the NAAC. The Peer-Team-Visit is expected in September/ November of this year. Despite multifarious hazards, it has been possible due to untiring effort of all the members of the IQAC (Inernal Quality Assurance Cell) and others from different sections of the college as well as the society. I thank all of them from the core of my heart. Perhaps, it is known to all that such reassessment has been mandatory without which no financial support will be received by the college in future.
It needs to be mentined that Online Admission to 1st year classes has already been implemented from the sessin: 2015-2016 as per the Govt. directive and out of the financial assistance provided by the StateGovt. last year. We are going to introduce Online Admission to 2nd & 3rd year lasses also. In this regard, active cooperation of all, in particular, the members of the concerned subcommittee is solicited.
At the end, I am optimistic of having fullest cooperation of my dear colleagues, students and people of various sections of society in running the colege smoothly and peacefully, in addressing all problems and so on. I hope there will be more and more development of the college in all respects in the days to come.
