Founded by the first non-European Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Th?kur(popularly known as Tagore) in 1921, Visva-Bharati was declared to be a central university and an institution of national importance by an Act of Parliament in 1951. The President of India is the Paridarsaka (Visitor) of the University, the Governor of West Bengal is the Pradhana (Rector), and the Prime Minister of India acts as the Acharya (Chancellor). The President of India appoints the Upacharya (Vice-chancellor) of the University.
In May 1951, Visva-Bharati was declared to be a Central University and "An Institution of National Importance" by an Act of Parliament. It was granted the status of a unitary, teaching and residential university. The status and function of all the major institutions have been redefined in successive Amendments.
An information brochure giving details of the academic requirements for
admission to a particular course and of the other documents required for submitting
an application is supplied along with the application form.
Application form completed in all respects should reach the Principal of the
Institute concerned within the stipulated date fixed for the purpose.
Candidates willing to apply for more than one course / stream should apply separately.
Incomplete applications are liable to be rejected.
The Central Admission Committee decides upon the admission criteria for the
different courses from time to time. Special categories of candidates, such as S.C./S.T.,
physically handicapped etc. are admitted as per Government of India rules and in
accordance with the quota of seats earmarked for them.
