The University is named after three illustrious tribal leaders who mastered courage to put up valiant resistance against British imperialist oppression.

SIDHO-KANHO
On 30th June, 1885, Sidho Murmu and his brother Kanho, two great Santal rebel leaders mobilized ten thousand Santals in an uprising against British imperialist power and their Indian subordinates. The movement was brutally suppressed by the British, but it had left an indelible mark in the history of anti-British nationalist movement and also forced to initiate change in the colonizers’ policy against the colonized. The day is still celebrated among the Santal community with great respect and spirit for the thousands of the Santal martyrs who sacrificed their lives along with their two celebrated leaders to win freedom from the clutch of British rulers.

Birsha Munda (1875-1900): A fearless leader belonging to the Munda tribe and subsequently turned into a folk hero, Birsha led a movement that sparked fire and fury against the British Raj in the tribal belt of modern Bihar and Jharkhand in the late 19th century and was honoured with a semi-divine status by his followers. So fierce and deep-seated was his attachment towards his own land, surrounded by forest on all sides that he succeeded to strike a severe blow to the British imperialist hierarchy. He was finally caught by the British on 3rd February, 1900 when he was only 25 years old and finally died in mysterious circumstances on June 9, 1900 in Ranchi Jail.
The University pays rich tribute to the ever lasting memory of these martyrs who, by their patriotic valour had made the posterity indebted to them.
Sidho Kanho Birsha University (SKBU), Purulia aspires to be a premier center for advanced knowledge and top quality research. The university has launched its journey on a high note under the laudable stewardship of the Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Samita Manna. A group of highly committed and ably resourceful faculty members, superbly devoted officials and staff have made it possible for the university to move ahead in such a short span of time. It is really wonderful that within such a short time this university has drawn the attention from all corners. The student community too has a vibrant presence and with futural plans for research and quality academic activism, SKB UNIVERSITY would definitely be a force to reckon with in times to come. Our objectives remain the same, striving towards becoming an academy of the future, an institution of global standard, catering to the service of the nation and the larger mankind.
