The independence of India in 1947 was coupled with the tragic partition of Bengal. Thousands of rootless people swarmed into West Bengal to start life a new. Nadia is one of such districts, which accommodated a large section of these displaced persons. Ranaghat along with other principal towns of Nadia had to provide shelter to most of the refugees. In such a situation, a few educationists dreamt of disseminating the fruits of higher education among the people of the surrounding areas. It was thus that Ranaghat College made its humble beginning in a small room of Pal Chowdhury High School, Ranaghat, Nadia, in 1950 with affiliation to Calcutta University. Later it was shifted to its present premises by the side of the National Highway 34. The College, located on a land of 4.68 acres, is well connected by road and railways and ever since its inception it has been instrumental in serving students from all section of the society irrespective of caste, creed and religion presently affiliated to the University of Kalyani, Ranaghat college offers three undergraduate programmes leading to B.A, B.Sc and B.Com degrees with Honours, Major and General courses. Ranaghat College also offers regular Master Course in Bengali under the University of Kalyani, DODL under the University of Kalyani in Bengali, English, History and education from the year 2014. Ranaghat College is operating a regular study centre of IGNOU, The Central University with U.G, P.G, Certificate and Diploma Courses.

The eight existing buildings of the College have several rooms including lecture halls, practical laboratories for science subjects, one laboratory in the department of Geography, English Language laboratory, two Computer Centers, a Central Library apart from several departmental libraries, canteen, play ground, auditorium, separate common rooms for girls and boys, NSS and NCC rooms, Students Union rooms, adequate facilities for football, cricket, badminton and volley ball, a newly established computer room with Internet connectivity and an arboretum. Ranaghat College has been assessed and accredited by NAAC in 2007 and awarded B+ grade.

Ranaghat College, Nadia was established in 1950 as an only institution of higher education in the area with the co-operation of locals. It traversed a long way successfully fulfilling the aspiration of many students. After running a race of 66 years it has now become the pride of Nadia district with its magnificent buildings, well-developed faculties of Humanities, Science and Commerce, various academic and extra-curricular facilities and brilliant academic result. The College is affiliated to the University of Kalyani and offers three undergraduate programmes leading to B.A, B.Sc and B.Com degrees. University of Kalyani has extended affiliation of regular master course in Bengali from the year 2016 and DODL of the University has extended their affiliation for master degree courses in Bengali, English, History and Education from the year 2016. IGNOU, The Central University has also granted affiliation of Master Degree, Bachelor Degree, Diploma and Certificate Courses in several subjects in the year 2014. College Campus consisted with eight buildings as Administrative Building, Science Building, Library Building, Auditorium, Jubilee Building, Commerce Building, Q1 and Q2 Building. Ranaghat College has been assessed and accredited by NAAC in the year 2007 and awarded B+ grade.

Admission Info

An Honours candidate is eligible to apply in three Honours subjects in one Admission form. If a candidate is willing to be considered for General course she will have to submit separate Admission form specified for the purpose.

1. Honours Merit list will be prepared by taking Sum total of best scored five subjects + Marks obtained in concerned subject or related subject.

2. Marks will be deducted @ 2% from the best of five subjects in General Course and @ 2% from Total of (best of five subjects + Honours subject) in Honours Course in case of applicants of previous year/years.

3. Reservation as per Government rules.

4. If one is absent at the time of counseling, she will not be entertained later on.

5. If any vacancy falls in any Honours subject, vacancy will be filled up from the merit listed candidates.

6. If anyone is admitted to other College, she should get her previous admission cancelled.

7. Admission of a transferred candidate is allowed provided:
i) Last date of admission as laid down by the University is not over.
ii) Seat is available.
iii) Subject combination matches.
iv) Production of a Transfer Certificate from the Principal of the college in which she studied last is must.

8. S.C./S.T./OBC-A/OBC-B Candidates should furnish Caste Certificate issued by the competent authority (Sub Divisional Officer of the Sub-Division and others as declared by competent authority) along with the application form without which application will not be entertained.
