National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Kolkata (NIPER-K) was created in 2007 under the aegis of Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizer as a centre of excellence for higher education, research and development in pharmaceutical sciences. This followed establishment of NIPER Mohali, which is the first national level institute in pharmaceutical sciences with a proclaimed objective of becoming a centre of excellence for advanced studies and research in pharmaceutical sciences. NIPERs are conceived to provide leadership in pharmaceutical sciences and related areas not only within the country, but also to the countries in South East Asia, South Asia and Africa. NIPER is a member of Association of Indian Universities and Association of Commonwealth Universities to become a globally recognized brand.

The institute was declared as an Institute of National importance by Government of India through Act of Parliament ( NIPER Act 1998 & NIPER amendment Act 2007). At present the Institute is housed at Indian Institute of Chemical Biology (CSIR-IICB), a premier Institute of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, India.

Since inception till date 8 batches ( Total 325 ) completed M.S.(Pharm.) degree from NIPER Kolkata. Till date average placement rate of NIPER Kolkata students ~72%. 220 are engaged in companies and academic institutions Among them, 220 are engaged in companies and academic institutions, 66 students are carrying out Ph.D. in various Institutes including 12 in abroad and out of them 12 have been awarded the degrees.

Research done at NIPER Kolkata has led to 49 scientific publications in reputed international peer reviewed journals. In recognition of this significant input to country's drug industry covering drug development and research, Steering committee has approved starting from academic year 2016-2017, Ph.D. program in three academic disciplines of pharmaceuticals at NIPER Kolkata and 10 students have been admitted. NIPER Kolkata is happy to share that both the toppers for NIPER Ph.D program during this academic year are from NIPER Kolkata.
