Kalipada Ghosh Tarai Mahavidyalaya, recognised by UGC under 2f and 12B was established in November 1988 as an undergraduate College. This is a grant-in aid college affiliated to the University of North Bengal. The College has around 2.22 acres of land in a rural-tribal belt of Darjeeling district, West Bengal and this is a co- educational institution.
The college has been Accredited at the B level by the executive committee of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in its meeting held on February 02, 2006. The College was established with a mission of spreading higher education among the under privileged class and rural people. The college provides undergraduate programmes under two faculties - Arts and Commerce. The B.A programme covers Honours in English, History, Bengali, Geography,, Hindi, Political Science, Sociology and Nepali B.Com. programme covers Honours in Accounting and Management. Besides, there are 10 General stream subjects in Bengali, Nepali, Hindi, English, Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, and Commerce also. These subjects enable students for competitive examinations and nurture the cultural heritage as well. The success rate of the college is about 85%. The college follows a transparent system of admission on the basis of marks obtainedin last examinations.
Apart from Chalk and Talk mode of teaching the college applies some other skill-based modes too through group discussions, students’ Seminars, quiz-competitions, power point presentation, essay writing, project-work etc. The College has some extension activities of Community Development, Health and Hygiene Awareness, Medical Camp, Adult education and awareness, AIDS awareness, especially through NCC and NSS wings of the College. Meritorious and poor students are given financial assistance out of poor fund, students from the ST, SC & OBC communities are given State Govt. stipends. Below Poverty Line students are also given financial assistance out of poor fund. The College promotes Cultural activities amongst students. The College publishes annual magazine. The College holds Counseling sessions in collaboration with different organizations on the issues of Drug addiction, Juvenile delinquency etc. The library has been computerized and is well equipped. NCC unit has done commendable performance and is one cadet is recommended for Youth Exchange Programme. The college has career counselling cell also.
