It is the oldest college of the district having glorious past. Initially it was St. Mary’s Institution founded in 1862 by the French Catholic Missionary, Rev. Magloire Barthet. The institution was renamed as Dupleix College in 1901, in memory of Governor General Joseph François Dupleix. At the time of Indian independence movement, This college became a centre of revolutionary activities. Professor Charuchandra Ray was the mentor of Bengali revolutionaries. The college received official recognition by the French government and was brought under the French Education Directorate only in June 1938. In 1947 the college was again renamed as Chandernagore College. Presently it became affiliated to the University of Burdwan

Principal's Desk

Begun under the French colonial government, Chandernagore College, previously known as College Dupleix, has been witness to the changing courses of history and has striven to contribute to the academic enhancement of the residents of Chandernagore and surrounding regions. With gradual improvement over the last few years, the College now boasts of 19 undergraduate departments and 3 post-graduate departments, consisting of both young and experienced faculty members who are actively involved in teaching and research. Particularly significant is the role of the Department of French as this is one of the few places in West Bengal where French is taught at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels.

Increasing number of students have been seeking admission to the college each year and the institution, in accordance with governmental norms, has been catering to a wide cross-section of society and students from economically backward sections of the society are also provided with diverse government sanctioned grants to ensure their successful academic pursuits. Students also get to enjoy the resources of a rich library which houses hundreds of rare books, including the collection donated by Late Harihar Seth, many of which are particularly relevant for research on the French heritage of Chandernagore - a fact that has been internationally acknowledged.

However, the college is well aware of the fact that preserving heritage must go hand in hand with meeting the challenges of the present and the future. Infrastructural development and academic enrichment processes are therefore continuing in order to fulfil these aims and objectives. I welcome all prospective and existing students and their guardians, as well as well-wishers in general, to extend their cooperation to us as we march ahead toward our goals, with confidence and conviction.
