The library is situated at Chandannagar, former French territory and later it was merged with West Bengal (in 1952) as a Sub-Divisional Town under Hooghly District. Chandannagar Pustakagar was initially started in a rented house by Sri Jadunath Palit and some of his close friends in the year 1973. After passing through different phases it finally found a permanent place in 1920 in the building built by the great philanthropist Sri Harihar Sett, then Secretary of the Managing Committee named “Nritya Gopal Smrity Mandir – O – Chandannagar Pustakagar “. The inauguration of the Building was done by Sri Surendra Nath Banerjee and the function was presided over by Mahamohopadhyan Haraprasad Shastri. This structure has recently been declared as heritage building by the Heritage Commission, West Bengal. The Management of this library was taken over by the Govt. of West Bengal in the year 1975 and it had been recognized as a Sub-Divisional Town Library. The expenses of running this library is met by the Govt. grant as well as the subscription of general member. The library has collection of journals as well as Magazines, based on freedom struggle of India and also books on Philosophy, History and Biography. This is a major attraction for the students and researchers throughout these years. The total number of books are at around 60 thousand. Efforts are being made to preserve these books and some valuable manuscripts possessed by this library. Recently, steps are being taken to improving the services by introducing computerized facility.
