he Birbhum Institute of Engineering and Technology, Suri (BIET Suri), India, was established by the Indian Centre for Advancement of Research and Education (ICARE), Birbhum under the chairmanship of Shri Somnath Chatterjee, Speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha and the Vice Chairmanship of Shri Pranab Mukherjee, Ex-Finance Minister, Government of India, Ex-President, Government of India. BIET started functioning from 1999 under the chairmanship of Indologist and educationalist Professor Padmashri Late Ramaranjan Mukherjee. The institute is run as a non-profit organization with guidance from academicians like Professor Amitabha Ghosh, former Director, IIT Kharagpur who is the Chairman of Board of Governors and other social workers and philanthropists from the District and around. Professor Ajoy Ray is a member of the Board of Governors. Previously it functioned under Burdwan University and later moved under MAKAUT (Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology) erstwhile the West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT) after it's formation.

Situated at the sprawling technocomplex of 32 acres at Suri, Birbhum, BIET emerged as the pioneer engineering institute in Birbhum. It receives aid from the Government of West Bengal, World Bank under TEQIP-II, Birbhum Zilla Parishad, West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited and MPLAD scheme for the development of the infrastructure and the campus.

"The term ‘Technology’, being essentially generic throughout the world acquires a new rationale in the context of Birbhum (Suri). In this age of globalization many small ventures have emerged to be big. The small town of Suri is now dazzling in the map of Engineering Institutes of the country. Birbhum Institute of Engineering and Technology, the first EngineeringCollege at degree level in the District of Birbhum has been 16 successful years of journey since we started this Institution.

The District has been contributing in its own subtle way towards the overall growth of the State as eminent personalities from the District, from diverse fields of life, have been catalyzing its development process. Education has always been the prime component of development for the District. Rabindranath Tagore founded “Shantiniketan” here to spread his concept of education through Visva- Bharati University. Likewise, Birbhum Institute of Engineering and Technology has been the pioneer in providing quality technocrats from the District.

The Institute came into existence through earnest dedication of a number of Educationists, Philanthropists and Social Workers from the District. ICARE, Birbhum, the parent society behind the shaping of BIET was formed by eminent personalities like Shri Pranab Mukherjee(at present President of India), Shri Somnath Chatterjee(former Speaker of Parliament), Late Professor Padmashree Ramaranjan Mukherji, former Chancellor and Vice-Chancellors, Shri Braja Mukherjee, former Sabhadhipati, Birbhum Zilla Parishad , Dr. Ramchandra Dome, Hon’ble ex-MP, Lok Sabha and Sk. Islam ex-karmadakshya,Birbhum Zilla Parishad and also other distinguished personalities from the area.Dr. Ramchandra Dome is the Secretary of the Society. The Society (ICARE) has entrusted the Board of Governors to function as the highest decision making authority of the Institute. At present, the Chairman of BOG is Prof.(Dr.)Debabrata Dasgupta, Former Vice-Chancellor , Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Kalyani, and he is responsible for the administration of Birbhum Institute of Engineering and Technology along with the members of Board of Governors.
