Global agriculture is at a critical juncture now at the beginning of the new millennium. We are facing several critical challenges including alarmingly increasing world population; incidence of deadly chronic diseases including cancer, AIDS, diabetes, obesity and hypertension; malnutrition; depletion of fossil fuel; genetic erosion of biodiversity; environmental pollution; and drastic effects of global warming and climate change; to name a few. We have to employ several modern concepts, strategies, tools and techniques to combat and mitigate these challenges obviously complemented by traditional knowledge and methodologies. All these global challenges we confront today are universal for our nation and the state and require global solutions.

During the last two year, we have successfully addressed many long-pending critical problems of our Viswavidyalaya and initiated several developmental works related to infrastructure development and capacity building, and qualitative and quantitative improvement in the patterns of teaching, research and extension of our Viswavidyalaya thanks to the strong support mainly from the Government of West Bengal and ICAR.

Our vision is to place our Viswavidyalaya in the national as well as in the international map playing a leadership role at the regional, national and international level following the philosophies that a Viswavidyalaya is in principle an academic family and any discipline of science should have a human face at the end of the day. Our mission is to nourish the future generation of agricultural soldiers; solve the prevailing and emerging agricultural problems of our state and our nation; and get prepared to combat and mitigate the future challenges on transdisciplinary, multistate and multinational mode following participatory agriculture and fostering public-private partnership modes.

We dream for an Evergreen Revolution soon to happen so that we could be able to sing forever “Sujalang, suphalang, malayajasheetalam, shashyashayamalangmataram – VandeMataram.”
