Some young social activists and freedom fighters established Basanta Memorial Library in the name of their late comrade Basanta Mitra at Sharat Chandra Banerjee’s house in the year 1919. Library was transferred permanently to present building in 1941. Library was renamed as Basanta Smriti Pathagar in 1961 to tribute Rabindranath’s birth centenary . The library is known as Govt. sponsored Town Library since 1982.
