The task of verbatim presentation of the 'Profile' or 'Facts and Figures' of Balurghat High School, especially on the eve of its celebration of Centenary year 2006-2007, seems to be Herculean in nature; owing to the paucity of records and space, errors and omissions may inevitably crop in. Yet it cannot be sidetracked since it is tantamount to dereliction on the part of the school management. So, in this humble attempt to present the same in a terse highlight form, if any error or omission detected may kindly be forgiven with benevolence and brought to the knowledge of the school with authentic proof for correction. The origin of Balurghat High School may be traced back in the report of A.C. Macdnell, Inspector of Schools, Rajshahi Division, made in 1901. It says, "The local bar pays the difference between the expenditure and income. Besides paying this contribution, the Bar practically manages the school and takes great interest in it." And in 1903 when the school house was gutted in a great fire and the school was being temporarily held in Gouri Paul's House, the report of the District Magistrate, Dinajpur, states that it was reconstructed with donation from many like R.N.Sanyal, Rani Meena Kumari and other elite and so on the occasion of the Foundation Stone Laying ceremony, the District Magistrate observed, "It stands now without exaggeration as the first Middle English School of the District". For general information, it is interesting to note that in the same campus there ran a primary school called 'Charubabu's Pathshala' for quite a long period of time and simultaneously Balurghat Middle English School had class III as the beginning at the initial stage which was a lone exception then.However, in a very short period of time, the school was elevated to a High
